Filmmaking for documentary and heritage projects
I direct documentary film — independent factual work alongside commissions for historic sites, social history projects, and causes I believe in. What connects it is an interest in real people and the stories they carry, whether that's a boxer training for a cause, a punk archive charting a movement, or a costumed re-creation of royal history.
Recent work includes Punk in the East, a documentary short for the digital archive and social history project of the same name — launched in 2016 by historian Matthew Worley to document the emergence and evolution of the punk movement across East Anglia. I co-directed and shot the piece.
I also co-directed and shot a boxing documentary produced pro bono for the Bruno Tampo Foundation, telling the story of how Bruno Tampo overcame adversity to bring his vision for change to life — made to actively promote the foundation's work and raise awareness, with a small crew and a soundtrack from a freelance composer.
Alongside these, I direct independent documentaries including Stronger than the Wave, a feature documentary that has screened on the festival circuit, and have produced work for Historic Royal Palaces. Past broadcast and editorial placement includes Sky Arts and Nowness.
Documentary and heritage work often comes with its own constraints — access windows, conservation requirements, subjects who've never been filmed before. I'm comfortable working within those, observationally and at the subject's pace, rather than imposing a shoot on them.
If you're a charity, cultural or heritage organisation, or subject with a real story to tell, I'd be glad to talk about your project.
